Sunrise Christian (Bel Aire, Kan.) winger Mark Mitchell is one of the most dominant and versatile forwards in the nation, registering 18th overall in SI99 for 2022. On Friday, he picked Duke over UCLA and wrote an exclusive blog for Sports Illustrated to break down his thought process behind the decision.
Hey, what’s up everyone, it’s Mark Mitchell and I’m thrilled to announce that I’m now part of The Brotherhood!
Man! I’m so excited to be able to play for such a legendary program as Duke!
It was a tough decision but, in the end, the relationship I had with coach (Jon) Scheyer and getting to know the players they brought in really helped me in my decision.
My brother kept telling me to go where my heart was, and I really knew it was Duke the more I thought about it.
Honestly, it was after the Gonzaga match that it did this to me.
Just seeing the atmosphere there and the energy the team was playing with was something I knew I wanted to be a part of.

Then when I visited I was there with Kyle (Filipowski), Derek (Lively) and Dariq (Whitehead) and it really gave me a chance to bond with them. We’re all highly touted players, but all of us were talking about doing whatever it takes to win there at Duke.
We were all on the same page.
When I found out for sure, I just called Coach Scheyer and he was really excited!
Our class is pretty crazy!
We are obviously super talented and versatile.
We have Dariq who is a great guard and an explosive scorer, Kyle is an upside four who can beat you in different ways, Derek is a 7-footer who can do it all and dominate defensively, Jaden (Schutt) is the best shooter of the country and I am a versatile striker capable of doing everything.
It’s going to be special for us next year!
I’m so relieved to have that decision out of the way. I’ve really been back and forth between Duke and UCLA for months, but I made the right decision for me and it feels good.
Sure, we’ll be the first class at Duke without Coach K, but we’re all talking about how we want to prove that Duke will continue to be Duke.
We are all motivated by this. I have 100% confidence in Coach Scheyer and I know that we are all committed to the goal and we are all behind him 100%.
It really is a family; it really is a brotherhood there!
OK guys I have to go but I wanted to give you a deeper insight into why I chose Duke.
Thanks for taking the time to read!
